Must be mature, reliable, customer service-oriented, have attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. Duties include: greeting library patrons in person and on the telephone; check out materials; check in, arrange and reshelve returned items; respond to requests; search for missing items; take inventory and do shelf reading; assist with placing materials on reserve; keep circulation statistics; straighten and clear study areas of used materials; service copiers; website (links) update, assist with closing the library nightly and other duties as assigned.. The library is open 82 hours per week, 7 days a week, so students are able to work hours around their classes. Positions require a person who enjoys a great deal of interaction with people. The student will work regular shifts of 8-10 hours per week in a set schedule that is built around their classes and other academic commitments.
This is the first role students assume upon beginning their work-study position at the library. As they advance in this role, they may find more specialized, independent work with more flexible hours, including the following responsibilities:
Students work under the supervision of the Collections Librarian. Must be able to multi-task and follow instructions. Attention to detail, dependability and punctuality are very important. Duties include receiving new books, data entry, physically preparing materials to go on the shelf, book repair and shelving.
The Shelver will shelve library materials according to the classification system. The shelver will also assist with stacks maintenance, search for lost or missing books, shift books to make more room on the shelves, help with tagging and inventory projects. The position requires a set schedule of two hours per weekday, built around the student’s class schedule.
